The Bing Turkby Ensemble: The Best of Bing - 10 Years of Turkby
Steve Asplin, Manawatu
Standard, May 2007.
What started as one man, a Tascam 4-track and a backless chain sawn guitar somewhere
in the heady metropolis of Turakina has become 10 years of manic lo-fi pop/rock
from the man affectionately known as Bing Turkby. And to celebrate a decade of Turkby
the man himself has selected 21 tracks of fuzzed out, wigged out rock and roll that
highlights the humorous and somewhat absurd over the top nature of his songwriting.
In the DIY spirit of Chris Knox (possibly Bing's biggest inspiration) Turkby wrote,
recorded and performed most of what is here, which is mainly short songs full of
distorted guitar riffs, primal drumming and vocals not far removed from the gruffness
of Motorhead's Lemmy. The album is somewhat overlong but as a document of 10 years
of Turakina madness from Turkby, it's an interesting listen.
